Documents You Need To Sell Your Car In Illinois
Certificate of Title
Complete the reverse side of the title:
- Buyer name and address.
- Buyer signature.
- Your signature.
- Odometer disclosure if the car is less than 10 years old.
- Rebuilt from salvage disclosure if needed.
Odometer Statement
If your car is less than 10 years old, complete the odometer disclosure on the back of the title.
If there’s no room on the title, you and the buyer must complete the Federal Odometer Disclosure Statement.
Notice of Transfer of Ownership
An Illinois title has a detachable Notice of Sale form to fill out and mail to the Illinois Secretary of State. This protects you if the vehicle is:
- Used in a crime.
- In an accident.
- Abandoned.
- Ticketed.
Bill of Sale
Illinois doesn’t require a bill of sale. But a record of the sale might protect you if the new owner fails to apply for a new title.
PrivateAuto includes a bill of sale with your car listing.
Vehicle History Report
By offering to provide a vehicle history report, you present yourself as a trustworthy seller.
When you sell your car with PrivateAuto, you get a history report from AutoCheck at no extra cost.
Illinois License Plates
Illinois requires you to remove the license plates from a sold automobile. You can transfer them to another car you own through the Illinois DMV.
