Documents Needed To Sell Your Car In Maryland

Certificate of Title

Complete the Assignment of Ownership on the reverse side of the title:

  • Buyer name and address.
  • Buyer signature.
  • Your signature
  • Odometer disclosure if the car is 10 years old or less.
  • Rebuilt from salvage disclosure if needed.

Odometer Statement

Complete the odometer statement on the back of the title. Automobiles older than 10 years are exempt.

If there’s no room on the title, you and the buyer must complete the Federal Odometer Disclosure Statement.

Replacing a Lost Title In Maryland

If you don’t have a title for the vehicle, you can request a replacement by filling out Form VR-018.

Bill of Sale

Maryland requires a notarized bill of sale if:

  • The car is less than 7 years old AND
  • You’re selling for more than $500 below the bluebook value.

Be sure to keep a copy of the title and the Bill of Sale for your records.

PrivateAuto includes a bill of sale with your vehicle listing.

Vehicle History Report

While it’s the buyer’s responsibility to research the car’s history, you can present yourself as a trustworthy seller by providing a history report.

PrivateAuto now partners with AutoCheck. When you sell your car with PrivateAuto Premium, your AutoCheck report is included at no extra cost.

Maryland License Plates

Maryland requires you to remove the license plates before you hand over the title and keys.

The buyer will need to register the vehicle and apply for a new title.

Conclusion

A lot of private sellers list on several sites. You should too. But when it’s time to close the deal, use PrivateAuto and close like a pro.
